Abstract
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has initiated a National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) program. The purpose of this program is to collect information on the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of many of the nation's important river basins and aquifers. The long-term goals of the NAWQA program are to describe the status and trends in the quality of surface and ground-water resources and to provide a sound, scientific understanding of the primary natural and human factors affecting the quality of these resources. In meeting these goals, the program will produce water quality information that will be useful to policy makers and managers at national, state and local levels. In addition, the NAWQA program will provide a source of long-term data for ecologists as well as significant opportunities for collaborative research.
