USGS Continues to Analyze Flooding Effects from Hurricanes Frances and Ivan in Western North Carolina, 2004
The USGS operated a streamgage on the Pigeon River at Canton just downstream from the Pigeon Street bridge from 1907 to 1984. This gage recorded the previous historic peak in 1940. In 1984, a new streamgage was installed on the Pigeon River just upstream from the State highway 215 bridge for better monitoring of flow conditions through the entire range of streamflows.
USGS staff visited the old gage structure following Hurricanes Frances and Ivan to determine if the peak at this location was greater than the peak recorded in 1940. Excellent high-water marks were found on the inside of the gage house door for both Frances and Ivan floods. These high-water marks were then adjusted to the old gage datum or reference point. Peak river stages for these events at the old gage location and related to the old gage datum are noted below.
At the old gage on the Pigeon River at Canton - station number 03457000
August 1940 peak was 20.75 feet
Flood peak from Hurricane Frances was 22.7 feet (old gage datum)
Flood peak from Hurricane Ivan was 23.7 feet (old gage datum)
