The core drilled at this location reached the Triassic Basin, 1032 to 1094 feet below the land surface. During the Triassic period, 210 million years ago, the Hope Plantation area resembled this modern fault-bounded valley in southern California near the Coyote Mountains in Imperial County, including gravelly sediment infill.

Fossils and footprints of Phytosaurs and Aetosaurs have been found in the Durham basin. These Triassic-era dinosaurs probably inhabited this valley during wet spells.
