Coastal Carolina Project 2004 - Crystal Coast
Location

USGS (WRD) has completed extensive work in North Carolina and Virginia as part of the RASA and NAWQA programs, and is currently engaged in an assessment of coastal ground-water issues along the entire Atlantic margin. A large USGS-led team is in the middle of a major geologic framework study of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, including offshore, barrier, and backbarrier studies. The project will link these two efforts and will initiate participation by the geography and biology disciplines in the collaborative project. The work addresses pressing regional societal issues related to water availability and brings innovative science to bear in informing management decisions about remedies that are both urgent and potentially very costly.

Albemarle Sound is an excellent location for this work; it provides a basis for expansion of future efforts into adjacent Pamlico Sound, as well as linking with other parallel work in ecosystems managed by the National Park Service and the National Wildlife Refuge system. This project identifies specific goals that are reachable with limited funds.
