North Carolina Water Science Center
North Carolina Hydrologic Alert System (NC-HAS) provides real-time email or text message alert notifications when user-specified thresholds are met at USGS data-collection sites in North Carolina. NC-HAS is a customizable system provided free to everyone.
The development and maintenance of the NC-HAS system is supported by the USGS data-collection partners in North Carolina, including numerous Federal, State, and local agencies; support also is provided through the USGS Cooperative Water Program and the USGS National Streamflow Information Program.
You can receive email or text message notifications when the river stage or streamflow either exceeds or falls below your specified threshold at your site of choice. Likewise, alerts can be established for cumulative 1-, 2-, 4-, 6-, or 12-hour precipitation amounts.
Real-time data from USGS streamgages are generally recorded at 5- to 15-minute intervals and transmitted via satellite to USGS offices every 1 to 4 hours, with more frequent transmission of data when extreme hydrologic events are occurring. Notifications will be based on the data received during these transmissions and compared to your threshold for subsequent notification.
You can subscribe using the interface below by selecting your site from the Google map interface or directly entering the USGS Streamgaging Station Number, entering the type of threshold (low or high), the threshold value, the parameter type to be scanned for your threshold, and the frequency of the alert notification. Your email address or text message phone number must also be specified.
The subscription is activated as follows: After all of the choices for your alert notification have been set, an activation code is sent to your email address or phone. This activation key must then be clicked (email) or entered (text message) to activate the alert. Save the activation key.
You have the option of unsubscribing for alerts on a station-by-station basis. Save the activation key. Each alert sent to you will have a link to unsubscribe, but the link will require your unique activation key.
Please read the DISCLAIMER before you subscribe to the alerts.

Zoom to the station of interest, click on the station, and the station number will automatically be entered into the site number field to the right. Alternatively, go to the NC Real-Time Streamflow Table and identify the station number of interest and manually enter the value into the site number field. Visit Streamflow Data on NWIS.
