Albemarle-Pamlico Study (ALBE), National Water-Quality Study (NAWQA)
This page contains data for basin-level charcterization available for ALBE-NAWQA surface-water sampling sites. All of the files are in Excel format. The files and data contained in them are as follows:
Agricultural Cropland (Excel, 76K): This file contains data from the USDA-FSA (Farm Service Agency) for the 1994 growing season. The basins are identified by the USGS Station IDs. The basins listed are a subset of the ALBE-NAWQA sampling sites.
Ecoregion (Excel, 27K): This file contains data for the ecoregion classification of basins. The ecoregions are defined in Omernik, J.M., 1987, Aquatic ecoregions of the conterminous United States: Annals of the Association of American Geographers, v. 77 p. 118-125 (map scale 1:7,500,000).
Geology (Excel, 26K): This file contains data for the Albemarle-Pamlico hydrogeology classifications of the basins. The base geologic coverage was derived from three existing geologic coverages for North Carolina and Virginia.
Land Use (Excel, 64K): This file contains data for the GIRAS classification of basins. The GIRAS classifications are defined in Anderson, J.R., Hardy, E.E., Roach, J.T., and Witmer, R.E., 1976, A land use and land cover classification system for use with remote sensor data: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 964, 28 p. and Mitchell, W.B., Guptill, S.C., Anderson, K.E., Feagas, R.G., and Hallam, C.A., 1977, GIRAS--A geographic information retrieval and analysis system for handling land use and land cover data: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1059, 16 p.
Wetlands (Excel, 198K): This file contains data for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) classifications of basins. The NWI classifications are defined in Cowardin, L.M., Carter, V., Golet, F., and LaRoe, E., 1979, Classification of wetlands and deepwater habitats of the United States: Washington, D.C., U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Publication FWS/OBS-79/31, 103 p.
Physiographic Region (Excel, 22 K): This file contains data for the USGS physiographic region classifications of basins. The physiographic regions are defined in Fenneman, N.M., and Johnson, D.W., 1946, Physical divisions of the United States: U.S. Geological Survey, map scale 1:7,000,000.
Vegetation (Excel, 35K): This file contains data for the USGS potential vegetation classifications of basins. The potential vegetation areas are defined in Kuchler, A.W., 1964, The potential natural vegetation of the conterminous United States: New York, American Geographical Society, Special Publication no. 36 map scale 1:3,168,000.
Soils (Excel, 31K): This file contains data for the USDA-SCS 1:2,000,000-scale generalized soil classifications of basins. The soil classifications are defined in U.S. Soil Conservation Service, 1970, Land resource regions and major land resource areas of the United States, in National Atlas of the United States: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, p. 157.
Soil Hydrologic Group (Excel, 32K): This file contains data for the USDA-SCS STATSGO soil hydrologic group classifications of basins.
